Illusion of Fordite

Mixed media on canvas
Acrylic and gel medium
5 × 5 in.

Fordite is a small mixed-media work built through layered paint strata, sanding, and surface disruption. Inspired by synthetic geology—especially Fordite, the hardened buildup of automotive paint—the piece mimics a cross-section of accumulated color through painterly excavation.

The surface reads like something cut open or unearthed. Bright acidic yellows, blues, reds, purples, and dark edges gather into a compact field, suggesting industrial residue, mineral formation, and accidental beauty. Its scale makes it feel less like a traditional painting and more like a specimen.

The work is not made from Fordite itself, but from the illusion of accumulation: acrylic and gel medium built up, buried, sanded, interrupted, and exposed.
